The thing about trivia is that it's never old. I mean, the facts are old, sure, but the fun of trying to remember just seems to be a part of human nature. Think of how many Trivial Pursuits are out there... even a Harry Potter edition.

That's one reason why we decided to go ahead and create User-Generated Quizzes on Moviefone. Its first weekend's metrics provide the second reason... actual numbers forthcoming, but many tens of thousands.

Recipe for User-Generated Quizzes
  • 1 million Moviefone fans with a knack for movie lore (including yours truly)
  • 1 nice quiz authoring tool
(include an easy way for users to upload their own pictures... see capture)
  • 1/2 Tbsp bar game scoring
  • 1 tsp user word-spice
Fold ingredients together in a large hub. Allow several days for mixture to rise and ferment in people's imaginations. Users can serve themselves whenever they have 5-10 minutes of free time.

IMPORTANT: Login required to create your own quiz

Actually, there are more than a few tricks to this new UG Content business that we're going to want to keep tabs on. For example, the hub's default sort at launch showed the Most Popular quizzes, but would that mean that the top items never get bumped and therefore folks won't find fresh content? On the converse, the Most Recent does not guarantee a quality product... after all, these are UG questions, some great and some not. We'll tinker in the coming weeks.

Another dimension to explore is the difference between "takers" and "makers." We have a Leader Board for the top quiz takers: overall; for each quiz; and sliced by time periods. For quiz makers (we call them Quizzards) we will be creating a Top Quizzards face wall, but exactly how we measure this is under exploration.

Regarding upcoming ideas, there is no doubt that competition within the community of quiz takers is an important dynamic to leverage, but we must also satisfy self-gratification impulses for our most important commodity: Quizzards.

I could wax for several more paragraphs, but instead I'll close with two points:
  1. Teamwork
a memorable project... a team with passion, talent, grit, and openness.
  2. Challenge
don't take my word for it... take one of my quizzes... take a quiz by one of your friends... there are some great ones out there.
